Learning After Competence

The best learning typically occurs AFTER we have a baseline of competence. Competence is simply the ability to do something successfully or efficiently. Competence is about knowledge -- an acquisition of skill. The mistake we often make is to think that if/when we gain competence, then we will arrive. However, there’s so much more that we need to learn beyond competence.

Beyond competence is the unknown. The unknown is where there might not be an answer. It can be messy. We have to be open to learning through those experiences. It’s essential that we have an understanding that there will always be situations with no right answer. No solution. There is more likely to be polarity than singular solutions. For us and for the people around us, the best learning comes after we acquire competence.
